|
Today I had the chance to run my first half marathon which was a 21,5 kilometres long. For it was a physical and mental challenge and a spiritual experience and I want to tell you something about the positive and negative things I experienced today.
It was a real challenge. I never run a half marathon or something like that before so I didn´t know what to expect. But I was not alone because my girlfriend Anita an a student and friend of mine Michael were also running without ever trying it before.
As a BJJ teacher and Fighter-Fitness freak;-) I was in good shape but with 95 Kilos I don´t have the typical runners physique.
The great thing was I did it. I run with a heart rate between 170-180 non-stop for 1 hour and 47 minutes until I finished my first half marathon. The last lap in the stadium my heart rate was over 180 and still I was able to sprint in the end. I was surprised about the energy levels I had still at the end and I think this comes from my training.
I just train BJJ and Bodyweight Exercises, DVRs, some isometrics and some sprinting. Once or twice a week I do some slow regeneration runs for about 5 miles but nothing extreme.
I think my training showed that you don´t need to be a runner to be good at it and after this experience I belive even more in my training. Why?
Because I felt the pain today. Running especially if you run like that or even more destroys your joints. After 6 miles I felt that this was hurting my joints very much. I´am sitting here and my hip and ankles are arching and I would never do this to my body again expect I decide to take a new challenge. But not for regular training.
If some people complain about hindu squats and joint health I can tell them just try running a half marathon then you know what really hurt the joints.
In the last week I was just doing some high rep squats to prepare myself for the event today and I ever experienced any problems. But the last 2 miles today hurt very much.
But that was also a great mental experience because I was able to take all the pain and fatigue and go through it. If you can run for nearly two hours with a heart rate between 170-180 you can pretty much do everything. It doesn´t matter if its fighting or some other sport. Your energy is there.
Spiritual it was a great experience because after a few miles you are in your own world. You make a spiritual experience which I had before in other activities also but I´am happy that I did it and that I open up myself to the different energies.
What was also great to experience was that age isn´t a real limit. I don´t know how many guys who were 20 or more years older beat me today.
As a coach I would say try it if you are in shape. Take the challenge once and you will learn but don´t use this kind of training to get in shape. I don´t think it will be good.
First of all like I said it hurt your joints and secondly I didn´t saw one person with a muscular upper body. Even the best guys looked very ripped and you can clearly see that they don´t have balance in their training.
So what is the message here? Bodyweight Exercises, DVRs, Sprints, Isometrics, Yoga, etc. are all great. They make you ready for every challenge without destroying your body.
I should also add that all of us three who took the challenge succeed. None of us gets hurt and we all were able to finish so I think it was a good experience.
Take care

DVR = Dynamic Visual Resistance. The stuff John Petterson is very much into in his books. You use your own muscle tension to create resistance.
Take care

Enjoyed that one.
I don´t enjoy running particularly, and Björns initial post confirmed my hope that I will never have to do it to get into great shape. |
